WHAT IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

Laser hair removal is a non-surgical treatment designed to reduce unwanted facial and body hair by targeting pigment within the hair follicle with concentrated laser energy.

The energy is absorbed by the targeted hair and converted into heat, damaging the follicle and reducing its ability to produce new hair. Because hair grows in different cycles and laser treatment is most effective during the active growth phase, multiple sessions are typically needed to achieve optimal hair reduction.

Unlike shaving, which removes hair only at the skin’s surface, or waxing, which temporarily removes hair from the root, laser hair removal targets the follicle itself for progressive, long-term hair reduction.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

During treatment, your provider adjusts the laser settings based on factors such as your skin tone, hair characteristics, treatment area, and previous response to treatment.

The laser delivers controlled energy to the targeted follicles while protecting the surrounding skin. Over the following days and weeks, treated hairs gradually shed.

With each session, additional follicles in an active growth phase can be targeted, resulting in progressively less hair growth.

Why Are Multiple Sessions Needed?

Not every hair is actively growing at the same time. Because laser treatment is most effective on hairs in their active growth phase, treatments are scheduled over several sessions to target additional follicles as they enter that stage.

Your treatment schedule will depend on the area being treated and your individual hair-growth pattern.

What Our Clients Say

Our Laser Hair Removal Technology

Prolase uses Splendor X laser technology to provide customizable laser hair removal treatments for different skin tones and hair characteristics.

The system incorporates Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths, allowing providers to customize treatment parameters based on the client’s skin type, hair characteristics, and treatment area.

For darker skin tones, Nd:YAG technology provides an option that can be used by trained providers with appropriately selected treatment settings.

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

A few simple steps before your appointment can help ensure your skin is ready for treatment and reduce the risk of irritation.

Before Your Treatment

  • Shave the treatment area before your appointment. If you’re unable to shave the area yourself, please let us know in advance so we can allow additional appointment time. Prolase can provide shaving for a $35 fee per area, per visit.
  • Do not wax, pluck, or use depilatory hair-removal products during your laser hair removal treatment series.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning for 1–2 weeks before treatment. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily on exposed areas.
  • Avoid self-tanning products for 1–2 weeks before and after treatment.
  • Pause tretinoin-type products and hydroquinone at least 2–3 days before treatment. This includes products such as Retin-A, Retin-A Micro, Renova, Tri-Luma, and similar formulas.
  • Tell your provider about all medications you are taking. Certain medications can increase sensitivity to laser treatment. We cannot perform treatment if you are currently taking antibiotics or have taken photosensitizing medication within the previous two weeks.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, speak with your provider about preventive medication such as Valtrex. Preventive treatment should begin no later than the day before your appointment.
  • Let us know before your appointment if you develop a cold sore, acne breakout, open lesion, illness, or other skin concern in the treatment area.
  • Tell your provider about recent Botox or dermal fillers. Facial laser treatments may affect the longevity of injectables performed within the previous six months, and Botox treatment within two weeks of laser hair removal is not recommended.

What to Expect After Treatment

Temporary redness, sensitivity, or small bumps around the hair follicles are common after laser hair removal and typically settle as the skin recovers.

Aftercare

  • Do not pick, scratch, or rub the treated area. Your skin may remain sensitive for several days.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for at least two weeks. Use SPF 30+ whenever the treated area is exposed to the sun.
  • Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas for several days following your treatment.
  • Allow treated hairs to shed naturally. It may take several weeks for hairs to push out of the follicle and fall away.
  • Remember that laser hair removal is a gradual process. Hair reduction occurs over a series of treatments rather than after a single session.
  • Treatment sessions are generally scheduled approximately 6–8 weeks apart, depending on the treatment area and your personalized plan.
If you develop blistering, crusting, scabbing, or signs of a burn, do not pick or scratch the area and contact Prolase promptly for guidance. Follow any aftercare instructions provided by your treatment provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal provides long-term hair reduction. Some hair may eventually regrow due to hormonal changes or other individual factors, and maintenance treatments may occasionally be recommended.

Most clients start with a series of approximately 6–12 laser hair removal sessions because hair grows in different cycles. Your exact treatment plan may vary depending on the treatment area, hair characteristics, skin type, and how your body responds to treatment.

Most clients describe the sensation as brief heat or a snapping feeling. Treatment comfort varies by person and treatment area, and the technology used at Prolase incorporates cooling to improve comfort.

Yes. Prolase uses advanced laser technology that allows providers to customize treatments for a wide range of skin tones, including darker Fitzpatrick skin types. For darker skin, Nd laser technology may be used because it can safely target the hair follicle while minimizing interaction with pigment in the surrounding skin. Your provider will select the appropriate settings based on your skin tone, hair characteristics, and treatment area.

Generally, shaving is preferred between treatments because it removes hair above the skin without pulling the follicle from the root. Follow the specific instructions provided by your provider.

Reducing hair growth may also help reduce recurring irritation and ingrown hairs associated with shaving and other hair-removal methods.

Yes. Laser hair removal can be performed for both women and men. Common treatment areas for men include the back, chest, shoulders, neck, and other areas of unwanted hair.

Pricing depends on the treatment area and treatment plan. Prolase offers individual treatment options as well as full-body options. Schedule a complimentary consultation or request pricing for recommendations based on your goals.
